They don't really care "how are you" though /German language

- How are you -

 

this sentence is probably the first few sentences we know when we learn a new language. Unlike Americans who like doing short talk, Germans are quite cool and it is not often for them to ask "how are you" (unless they are very close and want to know how their friends are going) So, it is not often for them to ask how are you

We can learn them simply memorizing the sentence

Wie geht es Ihnen/Wie geht es dir?

short form as Wie geht's

we might ask back by saying:

Gut danke. Und Ihren?

or simply answering:

Sehr gut

Gut, danke

Es geht

Nicht so gut (not so good)
