A professional article about the transport of a country should include whether is it easy to take the transport without buying tickets. It is usual in Europe since most of the metro and tram here don't have the gate, except the one in Amsterdam and Paris. Despite no gate in Budapest, I still strong advised travelers to buy their tickets in Budapest, especially for metro. There are metro staff standing near the ticket validation machine even though it is in rush hour.
#Airport to city center
Similar to another other country, you can buy single ticket, day tickets or tickets for 10 in a machine. Be aware if you are buying a ticket to airport shuttle bus, they only accept the airport shuttle bus ticket!!!
You could find 100E to 200E outside the airport, which is the most economical way to the city center. you could find the timetable and other details at http://bkk.hu/en/airport-shuttle/

To be honest, it is not necessary to take the public transport if you are living in city center. Most attractions like Central Market, Vörösmarty square and Chain Bridge are quite near to each other.
